New Digital Camera – Leica D-Lux 3

Joey | Geetha and Joey | Thursday, March 13th, 2008

leica_dlux3.jpg Given that there is a new baby on the way, increases the need to take pictures… After a tiny bit of research, and a whole lot of chatting on the phone, and hemmming and hawwwing, Geetha and picked out the camera pictured to the right of this text, the Leica D-Lux 3. It is a simple point and shoot, and while we’re still trying to master some of the nuances, it appears to take pictures of a quality that we’re feel we’re going to be happy with… One aspect which is unique to the D-Lux 3 is the ability to take pictures in a 16:9 image ratio (wide-screen)… the image below was me playing around with the camera this morning…. Be forwarned… the image that the following links to is over 3MB, for anyone out there doing Research on the D-Lux…Buddha-1.jpg

  1. May be you should have tried taking Gee’s pic and posted :) Do you have plans for any valaikappu function (like babyshower)?

  2. We have lots of pictures of Geetha and her belly… I just need permission! :-) We do have a date picked for Valaikappu, and are awaiting an update from the local temple to see if they can accomodate. It is tentatively scheduled for 3/27.

Due to travel and other commitments, right now it appears that Geetha and I will be doing the ceremony by ourselves, but I’ll do the best to get some pictures taken and post them here.

BTW, perhaps you can help me, is there a difference between Valaikappu and Seemandham?

  3. Oh. ok. Gee. It’s nice to see you as a mom-to-be. Why don’t u give permission to Joey? Atleast post your seemantham pics.

Joey, I hope the following explanation is correct. Valaikappu and Seemantham are almost the same except the way it’s named according to communities. Seemantham is followed in Brahmin communities where as Valaikappu is a common name in other communities. Seemantham is followed as per vaidika sastram hence it involves special prayers / chanting of mantras. Valaikappu, we don’t invite any priest as it’s more a social function (like baby shower). It’s a belief that this function keeps the baby safe in mother’s womb with God’s blessings.

Both the functions will be arranged in odd months of pregnancy (5th / 7th month) and follow the below practices. Pregnant lady will be given silk saree (usually green), bangles (gold / silver / glass as per wish. Usually odd nos are given) by her mother’s family. But the actual function is always in husband’s house. Also mother’s family prepares mixed rice & other snacks to give to pregnant girl & her family. After the above function, the girl will go to her mother’s place for delivery. We believe that the baby will recognize the sound from bangles.

But you know, generally all the above will vary from community to community and family to family. In my case, my husband did the function as his family follows that way. Good for me. :)

  4. Vanathi,

Thanks for the very clear and concise response… Even after four years of marriage I still have so much to learn!
